We are all the heroes of our own story. We all want to matter. One of my clients did me a great kindness by showing me how I mattered to him.
He did this by asking me questions, looking for my perspective on different approaches to managing change and innovation. His questions created a meaningful conversation in which we both learned from each other.
Test this idea on yourself as a leader. To whom do you direct questions in your team, and are those the people that matter the most to you? Are you relying on a few reliable colleagues to share their perspective on the most critical questions? Are there colleagues whom you could ask as well? How would that make them feel?
